Our September NICU: Children's Mercy Hospital

With your help, Kyte Baby has helped countless NICU babies and families through our Nominate-a-NICU initiative. By choosing a new NICU every single month, we have been able to donate to hospitals all over the country and honor your personal NICU journeys. We support the lifesaving care that these units and care teams provide to the smallest and sickest of babies - many of whom are our very own Kyte babies! This September, we are proud to name Children’s Mercy Hospital as our NICU of the month.

About the NICU at Children’s Mercy Hospital

Children’s Mercy Hospital is a nationally-ranked, nonprofit pediatric hospital located in Kansas City, MO. Its Level IV NICU is the region’s highest level NICU, caring for more than 80 fragile newborns every single day. As the only Level IV NICU in a 200-mile radius, Children’s Mercy Hospital provides specialized services for the sickest of babies who need surgery or highly advanced medical care.

The hospital is currently planning to build a new tower for acute patient care that would expand capacity by about 25-30% and integrate new technology. This expansion will allow Children’s Mercy Hospital to keep up with demand and provide the expertise, compassion, and advanced care that so many families count on.

The NICU Care Team

The NICU at Children’s Mercy Hospital has a nationally ranked medical team with more than 25 neonatologists, every type of pediatric subspecialist, nurses and nurse practitioners who are specially trained in neonatal care, neonatal therapists, psychologists, chaplains, social workers, child life specialists, lactation consultants, and more.

This care team works together to help patients and families navigate their NICU journey and prepare for life after the NICU too. By practicing family-centered care, Children’s Mercy Hospital keeps parents and family members as active participants in discussing, planning, and providing care for their child. Rather than being just visitors in the NICU, families are a crucial part of the care team.

Words From the Kyte Community

“Children’s Mercy is the only Level IV NICU serving the Kansas City area. They serve most of the state of Kansas, as well as states as far away as Oklahoma and Arkansas. They also serve a large population of Missouri. They are extremely devoted and strive to be the best place for babies to receive care.”

—Cailin W.

“My youngest daughter was in this NICU for 6.5 weeks and underwent two major surgeries there. Every doctor and nurse we came in contact with was so kind and caring. They also do so much for the local community and make care accessible for so many families that might not be able to afford the care their children need.”

—Kelsey S.

“I work as an RN in the NICU, and have never been so happy at a job or in a unit as I am here. Our staff cares for both the babies and parents with the utmost love and attention to detail. We see the sickest of sick babies all the way to when they are getting ready to go home!”

—Annie S.

“My 2-month old baby girl is currently in this NICU. It’s been a hard road, but we’re so glad that she’s in the best place possible with amazing and caring staff. As we have already been here for two months, and still have more to go, we have made connections with other families and become a community.”

—Faith D.

“Our daughter was transported to Children’s Mercy about 15 hours after her birth. Our team of doctors, nurses, specialists, and therapists did every possible test/scan to help find out the best course of treatment for our daughter. Our surgeons and nurses made us feel so empowered and involved as parents. Children’s Mercy is truly a special place, and the staff are truly special people.”

—Samantha Y.

“My son spent 7 months in their care. Without them, we wouldn’t have him in our life. Not only did they love my baby, many of the staff became family even after we went home. We live 3 hours away from this hospital and I never felt uncomfortable leaving him to go home. They always encouraged me to take time to care for myself.”

—Stevie I.
